Indian capacities in Science & Technology have come to be regarded as one of the most powerful instruments of growth and development, especially in the emerging scenario of the economy. In the wake of the recent developments and the new demands that are being placed on the S&T system, it is necessary to embark on some major science & technology projects which have relevance to national needs and which will also be relevant for tomorrow's technology. These projects should build upon the work already done at the national as well as international level.

The Department of Science & Technology plays a pivotal role in promotion of science & technology in the country. The department has wide ranging activities ranging from promoting high end basic research and development of cutting edge technologies on one hand to service the technological requirements of the common man through development of appropriate skills and technologies on the other.

The department through the National Science & Technology Entrepreneurship Development Board (NSTEDB) has the prime mandate of promoting Technology Business Incubators and Science & Technology Entrepreneurs Parks which facilitate promotion of knowledge based innovation driven enterprises.

info Dev's Incubator Initiative aims to promote effective and innovative use of ICT to promote small enterprise development and increased competitiveness in developing countries. To that end, the Initiative supports a number of business incubators in Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean, Eastern Europe and the Middle East. info Dev supports these institutions by providing opportunities for cross-border knowledge-sharing and partnerships, learning products, and limited financing (grants). In the process of providing these services, infoDev engages in applied research, yielding increased public knowledge of how to most effectively facilitate ICT-enabled innovation and entrepreneurship.
