Chairperson, CIIE
Genesis
CIIE was established in 2001 with
the support of Government of Gujarat, National Innovation
Foundation and the IIMA. Since then, a host of organizations,
professionals, academicians and networking partners
have been closely associated with the initiatives of
CIIE. Some of the ongoing projects are also being backed
by Wadhwani Foundation (set up by IT entrepreneur in
Silicon Valley, USA) and the Department of Science and
Technology, Government of India. Setting up of CIIE
was an outcome of the first national workshop on Indian
Incubator for Innovation Based Enterprise (I3)
at IIMA in 1998, which brought together innovators,
venture capitalists, entrepreneurs, technology administrators
and academics to understand the processes and policies
that will help commercialise innovations by individual
innovators. Expertise at IIMA in areas of technology
network, management, grassroots level innovations, innovative
organisation and practices as well as entrepreneurship
development, provided the necessary impetus and the
intellectual basis for this initiative.
Mission
To foster innovation and entrepreneurship
development through consultancy, research, training,
promotion and incubation in technologies or ideas that
are hi-tech and also those with profound social impact
to enhance competitiveness and welfare of the Indian
economy.
Key Objectives
- To incubate innovations and
help commercialise them through an enterprise
- To conduct research and develop
educational material on topics related to innovations
and their evolution into viable enterprises
- To disseminate research findings
and related information on the management of innovation,
incubation and entrepreneurship.
- Apart from the support of experts
operating through a dynamic networking model, closely
involve IIMA faculty and students at various stages
in the value chain of converting innovations into
enterprises.
Activities
The CIIE mission shall be backed
by the following activities:
- Incubation: Infrastructure support,
networks for technology, finance and related areas,
mentoring, consultancy, databases, information dissemination,
IPRs and international networking
- Entrepreneurship Development:
Business plans, consultancy, case studies, dissemination
of information and training programmes
Apart from training programmes and
consultancy, interactive workshops, seminars, developing
course material along with extensive networking operations
are conducted to push ahead the CIIE agenda.
Research and Training
The focus is on cutting edge research
on innovation, technology management, entrepreneurship
and competency building. CIIE aims to emerge as a leading
innovation and entrepreneurship information dissemination
hub. Activities in this area include agenda based research
programmes, partnership with other leading international
researchers, develop case studies and also courses for
IIMA programmes. Some of these courses include: Managing
Technology Networks, Strategic Management of IPRs, Entrepreneurship
and New Venture Planning, etc.

innovation and entrepreneurship amongst government officials,
innovators, researchers and students. New Ventures Seminar,
Science & Technology series lectures, Incubiz (focusing
on incubation business), Ideaz,
Consultancy and Clinics
CIIE provides consultancy relating
to innovation and enterprise development. Organising
several clinics for innovators and entrepreneurs in
Gujarat and outside are also part of the agenda. The
objective of these clinics will be to help innovators
in their commercialisation process and to link them
with CIIE's technology network.

programme to recognise innovators and idea generators.
Select innovators are then offered incubation support.
Also, innovation based business plan contest is organised
along with offer of incubation support to the hi-tech/high

Processes
The Indian Incubator for Innovation
Based Enterprises (I3) is managed by CIIE.
I3 help innovators to successfully commercialise
their innovation through an enterprise. The incubator
will actively scout individual innovators in public,
private and informal sectors, with capability to convert
innovation into a viable product but unable to do so
due to their inability to identify necessary technical,
managerial and financial resources. Selected innovators
(with hi-tech and high impact innovations) will be provided
with supporting infrastructure and network resources
to commercialise innovation over a time-bound period
(usually 20 months). The innovator should have a prototype
available for evaluation by a team of technical experts.
The incubator would develop networks of people and institutions
to assist incubation projects with technology support,
testing facilities, materials, prototyping facilities,
etc. The network also includes lawyers, patent filing
experts, venture capitalists, etc., catalysing commercialization
of the innovations. The centre also envisages running
mobile incubator clinics in various parts of the country
for certain periods to help innovators across the country.
Each innovator shall have a small support group comprising
two or three faculty members/experts to act as mentors.
Every two months, the innovator will present her/his
progress to the mentors and they can mutually decide
as to how much information would be put in the public
domain. Depending on the nature of the product design
developed, the innovator will be linked up by the incubator
with an appropriate technology network. These stakeholders
will help in providing support on various complementary
assets that would be required in the commercialisation
process. This would range from market analysis, development
of a business plan to prototyping, manufacturing planning,
etc.
Facilities
These among others include:
- Designated workplace with computer
access
- Network by which one could access
technology specialists and research labs to develop
or to improve the innovative technology including
research, testing facilities, materials, prototyping,
design, etc.
- IPR consultants - for help in
registering patent, copyright and trademarks
- Legal experts for firm incorporation,
venture capitalist, market research firms, advertisement
agencies and PR firms, finance and management forums,
faculty mentoring, databases, help in preparing business
plan for the incubatee product/technology, access
to facilities like library, telecom, photocopying
machine, canteen, etc.
