Introduction:
The
International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid
Tropics (ICRISAT) is a non-profit apolitical international
organization that is devoted to science based agricultural
development. ICRISAT is a part of Consultative Group
on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) works
mainly on agricultural research in semi-arid tropics
to enhance the livelihood of the society. ICRISAT envisaged
the Agri-Business Incubator (ABI) in partnership with
Department of Science and Technology, Government of
India, to facilitate entrepreneurs to incubate technologies
developed through agricultural research. ABI was started
in April 2003. ABI is a place where the process of starting
an agri-business venture or a product is catalyzed.
This is by supporting entrepreneurs with agriculture
technology, management consultancy networking with right
experts, venture capital funding, marketing experts
and physical infrastructure. The incubator maximizes
success by minimizing risk by offering best opportunity.
Objectives:
- Simulate technology development and transfer between
Institutes and entrepreneurs for commercialization
of agri-business technologies.
- Business Start-up and Support.
- Networking with agricultural R&D Centers of
excellence, National Universities, ICAR, Advanced
Centers, academic Institutions, and other relevant
International Institutes.
- Continuous Improvement and Innovation.
- Market Assessment and Trends.
- Awareness and generating interest about business
incubation.
Incubation Service:
- Technology transfer of hybrid seed production through
transgenic molecular breeding methods, tissue culture,
bio-pesticide, bio-fertilizer production, food and
seed quality control technologies
- Business facilitation for both forward and backward
integration
- Expert guidance in biological production, testing
evaluation and breeding techniques
- Training in entrepreneurship development of agri
and biotech business
- Providing hand holding service to incubates and
entrepreneurs to establish an enterprise from registration,
subsidy/grant, licenses, pilot production facility
and mentoring the entrepreneurs

Rusni Distilleries Pvt Ltd:
This is a startup concern planning to produce ethanol
from sweet sorghum, an innovative approach ideal to
our Indian conditions. ABI will be assisting this concern
in Breeders seed supply, backward integration in order
to develop a command area of sweet sorghum crop through
contract farming, partnership facilitation , loans syndication
and licensing protocols.
- M/s Bioseed India Pvt Ltd:
It is a part of DCM group of industries intending
to develop transgenic cotton with Monsanto Bt cotton
technology. ABI will be assisting this concern in
the introgression process with our expert backstopping
and biotech facilities.
- M/s Seed Works India Pvt Ltd:
This concern is interested in developing hybrid vegetable
and cottonseeds through transgenic and molecular breeding
technology. ABI will be assisting them with our scientific
advise on hybrid seed development and facilitate them
with our biotechnology lab, greenhouse and field facilities.
