The one and only Science and Technology Entrepreneurs'
Park in the IIT system was established at IIT Kharagpur
in 1986 with financial support from:
- The Department of Science and Technology, Government
of India
- Department of Science and Technology, Government
of West Bengal
- Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur
- Financial institutions - IDBI, IFCI and ICICI
Monitoring and Controlling of STEP
Activities
STEPS, individually, have their
own Governing Bodies to guide their functioning as well
as monitor their functioning more closely.
National Science and Technology
Entrepreneurship Development Board (NSTEDB), DST, New
Delhi has identified the following objectives for STEPs
- To forge a close linkage between
universities, academic and R & D institutions
on the one hand and industry on the other.
- To promote entrepreneurship among
Science and Technology persons, many of whom were
otherwise seeking jobs soon after their graduation.
- To provide R & D support
to the small scale industry mostly through interaction
with research institutions.
STEP- IIT Kharagpur, working in
complete harmony with its host institute (Indian Institute
of Technology, Kharagpur) identifies itself as,

What help does STEP-IIT Kharagpur
provide to the entrepreneur?
- Infrastructure like covered space, power, water,
communication facilities, etc.
- Technology available at bench level and help in
upgrading to commercial level
- Processing equipment, testing & computing facilities
- Help in the marketing of products
- Assistance in submitting project proposals to obtain
financial resources.
- Help in patenting the processes
STEP is actively participating in the incubation process
of the entrepreneurs, specially the start up companies
in preparing their business plans, getting seed capital
followed by venture funding. STEP is also working towards
translating some of the research outcomes of IIT faculty
to commercially viable products.
