TREC - STEP is the part of the national initiative to
breed knowledge based ventures in our society. Knowledge
based industries bring growth, hope and employment for
the future of our society. STEP as a conscious mechanism
for promoting knowledge based ventures of young science
and technology persons, facilitates flow of knowledge,
facilities and expertise from the parent educational
institution to the emerging entrepreneurs and to the
society at large.
TREC - STEP, established in 1986 in the sprawling environs
of Regional Engineering College, Tiruchirappalli is
the first STEP in the country. It has been continually
engaged in promoting a new genre of entrepreneurs and
many new initiatives for ushering in technology based
growth. To maintain excellence in cutting edge areas,
TREC - STEP focuses on
- Promotion of knowledge based industries
- Development and transfer of technologies
- Training in Technology and Business skills
- New Developmental Project initiatives
Development of an Academia - Industry - Innovation
system has always been the driving vision of TREC -
STEP.TREC - STEP is a model interface institution, which
delivers innovation, science and technology and entrepreneurship
through training, development and consultancy initiatives.

 TREC-STEP
has proved itself as an invaluable launch pad for budding
entrepreneurs, honing their entrepreneurial skills through
well-conceived business plan. Many support mechanisms
including the 6-week Entrepreneurship development programme,
provide the necessary managerial skills in strategic
thrust areas. The other promotional services include
the Common Machining facilities, Nursery sheds, office
and secretarial support besides access to TREC-STEP’s
dedicated team of management professionals who provide
a strategic springboard for the fledgling entrepreneurs
for their maiden flight to success. The presence of
the Satellite Earth Station of STPI and the Design Innovation
Centre, on the anvil, shall boost the promotion of ventures
in IT enabled Engineering Services.156 industries in
manufacturing as well as ICT sectors have been promoted
by TREC-STEP so far. They provide around 4500 sustainable
employment opportunities; Goods worth Rs.80 crores are
added to our GDP.
TREC-STEP has successfully completed Technology Development
project for Indian Railways – the up gradation of coal
fired Steam locomotives of the Nilagiri Mountain Railways
into an oil firing system TREC-STEP has also been involved
in new innovative developmental initiatives by partnering
with national and international developmental organizations
such as UNDP, UNIDO, BCD, DST and more recently the
World Bank, to develop technological and entrepreneurial
skills leading to sustainable livelihood creation.
Every year TREC-STEP trains 2000 to 3000 youth in various
technology & business skills at various levels.
The programmes range from Artificial intelligence and
IT skills to Modern appliances repair & maintenance
at the grass roots level. Academia-Industry meets are
arranged to further excellence in Industry Institution
Innovation Interaction.
Achievements
TREC-STEP has been consistently ranked among the best
STEP’s in the country, since inception, which motivates
the team to push the limits of excellence further. Some
of the credits received are:
- 156 vibrant knowledge based ventures promoted
- Winner of the “Best Performing STEP” award for the
year 2001 from Ministry of Science and Technology,
Government of India
- “Best Innovation” Award in 2002 from the Indian
Railway Board for upgradation of the Steam locomotive
of the Nilagiri Mountain Railway
- Awarded 9.5 on a scale of 10 for Project performance
in the UNDP-DST Project on Employment Generation
- UNIDO – DST Cluster Development programme for Trichy
Engineering Industrial cluster.
- Selected as the only Institution outside DSIR, for
implementing their Technopreneur Promotion Programme
(TePP)
- World Bank InfoDev Incubator Initiative support
for promoting knowledge based ventures
